Greetings from Chiberia!

Updated: Feb 2, 2019

The coldest day of the year has arrived in Chicago! The coldest day usually arrives sometime in January for us, and this year, that day is today. The actual temperature sits around the negative teens all day, but the wind chill factor puts us at -44 degrees Fahrenheit.

Over the last chilly week, we've binged a few shows and movies and I've been really happy with our picks.

  • #Kingdom is a South-Korean Netflix series about the old Korean countryside dealing with politics amidst a zombie apocalypse! The English dubbing is actually pretty good, too. Featuring Bae Doon from Sense8 and Cloud Atlas.

  • #IAmtheNight is a six-part limited series about a teenaged girl and a blacklisted journalist trying to track down the Black Dahlia murderer. Set in the 1950s, the series also addresses domestic turmoil and racial tensions in the LA area. Chris Pine reunites with Wonder Woman's director Patty Jenkins in this suspense thriller.

  • #BirdBox was the rage when it came out just before the holidays that we had been meaning to watch. It's truly an edge-of-your-seat thriller with an artistic undertone that I appreciate as a rarity in bigger-budget flicks. Sandra Bullock proves again and again that she has the acting chops for whatever roles she wants, and Bird Box is no exception.

  • #Polar is based on a graphic novel about assassins-for-hire. When one firm can't afford to pay the retirement fees of its employees, the owner's own hit squad begins taking them out. I really enjoyed this one for its action and stylized theme. Starring Mads Mikkelson as that one retiree who just can't be quit.

  • #Punisher by Marvel might be on its final season (we don't know yet!), and this one was a heartstring tugger. You'll definitely need to watch the previous season before this one, and it ties multiple threads together well. I'll be sad to see it end, as Punisher is definitely my favorite Marvel series.

  • #SaltFatAcidHeat has been on Netflix for a little while now. Since I started to run documentary-type shows as background noise for my work, I decided to give this one a shot. I'm only on episode two (Salt), but I plan on finishing it off soon.

I'm looking foward to posting more cold weather-themed updates soon! Some handy slow-cooker recipes will make a special appearance.
